Children
Last updated: Date – to come
The short version.
You need to be 16 or over to have a login. Younger children can be on the family tree as a card that their family looks after — they just can't sign in themselves.
Logins:
16 and over. Owning a tree: 16 and over too. When you join we ask your date of birth. If it shows you're under 16, we can't make a login — a grown-up in your family can add you to the tree as a card instead.
Children on the tree.
A parent or family member can add a child's card, with as little detail as they like. Children's cards and pictures stay private to the tree, are never public, and are never shown to search engines.
Can children use My Whole Family Tree?
Absolutely – exploring the tree together is what it's for. Children of any age can sit with a parent or grandparent and look through the family, the pictures and the stories.
Everyone with their own login needs to be 16 or over. We'd love to welcome younger ones sooner, but that's the line UK, EU and US law sets for family websites like ours. So younger family members can't have a login, or post and send messages using someone else's.
If we're ever told that's happening, we'll simply sign that login out and ask the grown-up to reset their password. The tree stays exactly as it is, and children always appear on it as part of the family.
A login made with a different age.
If we learn that someone under 16 made their own login by giving a different date of birth, we'll close it kindly and email them. Their card stays on the family's tree, and anything they posted goes to the Recycle bin for the tree's owner to look at.
